At Afro Taco, we celebrate the fusion of Ghanian and Mexican cuisines. Our founder, Chef Cliff Mills, created a unique menu that combines Mexican staples like burritos, tacos, and quesadillas with African flavors such as jollof rice and various spices. We believe in using fresh ingredients and authentic recipes to provide you with a one-of-a-kind culinary experience.

The Roots

Afro Taco is a unique food truck based in Newark, New Jersey, founded by Chef Cliff Mills. It offers a fusion of West African and Mexican flavors. The inspiration for Afro Taco comes from Chef Mills' Ghanaian heritage and his experiences growing up in Newark. The menu creatively combines Mexican cuisine staples like burritos, tacos, and quesadillas with African cuisine elements such as jollof rice and a variety of African spices and flavors.

 

The Afro Taco food truck started around 2016, initially as a means to bring together family and friends. It quickly gained popularity in the community, with its menu based on meals that were frequently requested during backyard BBQs. These dishes soon became the staple offerings of Afro Taco. The food truck is known for its vibrant yellow color, reminiscent of the Ghanaian flag, making it a distinctive presence on the streets of Newark.

Chef Mills, with over 15 years of catering experience, realized the potential of his unique culinary creations when his wife combined leftover ingredients from a catering event into a burrito, which turned out to be exceptionally delicious. This led to the birth of Afro Taco. The truck operates with a focus on community engagement and has even collaborated with organizations for charitable events, like partnering with the New York Jets and other entities to donate sneakers to the Newark YMCA.

Afro Taco is more than just a food truck; it represents a blend of cultures and flavors, reflecting the diverse culinary landscape of Newark. Chef Mills' vision for the business is to turn Afro Taco into a franchise, expanding its presence beyond New Jersey. The truck operates on specific days and times, offering a range of flavorful dishes that showcase the fusion of West African and Mexican cuisines.
